Archive of Apostolos S. Arvanitopoulos (1874-1942)

The personal archive of Apostolos S. Arvanitopoulos, which was donated in 2018 by the Greek Epigraphic Society to the Historical Archive of Antiquities and Restorations, includes artifacts from the private life and scientific activity of the enterprising Greek archaeologist.

The first category includes his correspondence with family and friends, as well as family photographs, greeting cards, memorabilia, etc. The second category includes his correspondence with scientists from Greece and abroad, notebooks-journals from 1912 to 1925, survey plans and photographs of finds, documents and official correspondence from his tenure as a Greek teacher, Ephor of Antiquities and University professor from 1892 to 1938, notes of university lectures, manuscripts of writings and lectures, letters to the press, etc. The variety of documents and the period of time covered make the personal archive of Apostolos S. Arvanitopoulos an invaluable source for studying not only the archaeology of Greece but also its turbulent history between the 19th and 20th centuries.
