Archive of Evangelia Protonotariou-Deilaki (1931-2002)

The personal archive of Evangelia Protonotariou-Deilaki was donated to the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology and Speleology by her daughter. After being classified by archaeologist E. Morou, it came into the possession of the DNAM in 2011.

It contains her doctoral thesis entitled ‘The Tombs of Argos’, excavation reports, drawings, excavation journals, films, photographs, contacts, pads with drawings and catalogues of pottery, reprints and works by Protonotariou-Deilaki and other archaeologists. The archive is full of material on archaeological sites in Argolis (Nafplio, Argos, Kazarma, Tiryns, Old Epidaurus, Dendra) and Corinthia (Pheneos). It includes activity reports, administrative and financial documents during her tenure as Ephor of Antiquities of Argolis - Corinthia and Head of Services of the Ministry during the years 1957, 1972 to 1975, 1980, 1991.

Year of birth: 1931; place of birth: Athens.

1949: Graduated from the Hellenic-French School of Athens (Saint Joseph).

1949 - 1953: Studied at the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens.

1953 - 1954: Attended special lessons with professor G. Mylonas.

1954: Graduated from the Department of History and Archaeology of the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens. Papers written at University: a) ‘Concerning the Mycenaean Circles’(1951), b) ‘Minoan Thalassocracy in Ancient Sources’ (1953).

1955: November. Passed the examinations of the Ministry of Education for the hiring of curators of antiquities.

1956 January, appointed probationary curator of antiquities.

1956 - 1958: Curator of Antiquities at the Ephorate (of Argolis - Corinthia). Excavations in Lerna, Argos, Tiryns, Loutraki, the Heraion of Argos, Pheneos in Corinth.

1956 – 1957: Participated in the Lerna excavation led by Derveni Professor John Langdon Caskey (excavation of a shaft grave and deeper strata, House of Tiles) and in Isthmia under the supervision of Professor Broneer (excavation of ancient wall and theatre).

1958 - 1959:Curator - Head of the 9th Ephorate (of Argolis - Corinthia). Excavation in Crannon - Inventory and identification of tells (magoules) in Thessaly.

1959 - 1960: Institute of Archaeology, London (Prehistory of Europe, Eastern Culture). Special Paper: Products of Prehistoric Pottery and its Influences. Scholar of the Archaeological Society at Athens. Visit to European Museums at the expense of the Archaeological Society.

1961 – 1964: Curator of the 4th Ephorate of Argolis - Corinthia [Excavations in Argos, Profitis Ilias, Pheneos in Corinthia].

1964 – 1965: Ephor, Deputy Head of the 4th Ephorate of Argolis - Corinthia (Excavations in Argos, Pheneos).

1966 - 1968: Ephor of Private Collections and Antique Shops - Ephor-Supervisor at the 4th Ephorate of Argolis - Corinthia / Excavations on the National Motorway.

1969 – 1973: Ephor of the 4th Ephorate of Argolis - Corinthia - Excavations in Argos, Nafplio, Asini, Loutraki, Pheneos, Lerna, Old Epidaurus, Ancient Corinth, Kourtaki, Areia.

1973 - 1974: Ephor of Volos (Excavations in Iolcus and Mikrothives).

1974 - 1977: Ephor of the 4th Ephorate of Argolis - Corinthia. Excavations in Nafplio (Paleolithic), Argos, Old Epidaurus, Ancient Corinth, Pheneos, Dendra.

1978: Director of the Archive of Monuments and Publications.

Content

The archival material was classified into 61 archival boxes. The digital recording and digitisation of selected archival artifacts was carried out by Archontoula Papoulakou, with the assistance of Chrysi Meladaki. The conservation of the archival artifacts was carried out by Konstantina Gavrilou.
