Simplification of Procedures - Accessibility of content online

In 2017, the implementation of the sub-project entitled ‘Simplification of the procedure: “Provision of copies of the minutes and opinions of the Central Archaeological Council, the Council of Museums, and the Central Council of Contemporary Monuments – Accessibility by the public online”’ of the project entitled ‘Simplification of the procedure for the provision of copies of the minutes and opinions of Councils of the Ministry of Culture – Accessibility of content online’ (MIS code 5000449, OP ‘Public Sector Reform’ NSRF 2014-2020) was completed. The operational support team, consisting of HAAR employees, supervised the digitisation of selected book-bound volumes containing the minutes of sessions of the Central Archaeological Council kept in the Historical Archive. The provision of copies of minutes and opinions of the Councils of the Ministry of Culture via the internet is operational and accessible on the website.

The Management of the Cultural Heritage of Greece through the archives of the Antiquities Services: digitisation, distribution and exploitation of historical artifacts

In 2014, the project entitled ‘The Management of the Cultural Heritage of Greece through the archives of the Antiquities Services: digitisation, distribution and exploitation of historical artifacts’ was completed. The project was part of the Operational Programme ‘Digital Convergence’, ‘Macedonia – Thrace’, ‘Crete & Aegean Islands’, ‘Thessaly – Central Greece – Epirus’, ‘Attica’ (MIS code 457164) and consisted of two sub-projects:

  • Sub-project 1: Development of an information system for the documentation, management and promotion of the archival material of the Antiquities Services.

  • Sub-project 2: Coordination, support and monitoring of digitisation actions.

As part of Sub-project 1, a new information system was created in accordance with modern internet technologies to support the documentation, management and promotion of archival material. The older database (access 2000) entries were successfully migrated and a web portal (portal) was created. As part of 2 Sub-project, historical documents of the 19th and 20th centuries were digitised and documented digitally, cost-plus and by direct award at both HAAR premises and at the Regional Services of Delphi, Cyclades and Rhodes.

The management information system was made public during a colloquium entitled ‘FROM MANUSCRIPTS TO DIGITAL RECORDING. The presentation of the information system for the documentation, management and promotion of archival material of the Antiquities Services”, on the occasion of the celebration of International Archives Day on 9 June 2015.

Digitisation and Digital Documentation of Collections and Monuments of the Ministry of Culture

Measure 1.3: Documentation, Management and Promotion of Greek Culture) was implemented. During the programme, selected artifacts were electronically recorded in the database and digitised, mainly consisting of documents, photographs, drawings and survey maps from the 19th century, with the primary purpose of salvaging and preserving them and with the ultimate goal of presenting aspects of the history of archaeology in Greece.

AREA I: Archives of European Archaeology

The electronic recording of the historical archive of the Archaeological Service began in early 2000. The archival material, which began to be gradually gathered from 1997 onwards at the present-day building of the DMNAM at 11, Agion Asomaton Street, dictated the need for archiving and recording in order to become manageable and ultimately accessible. The first important steps took place with the creation of a local database by Alexandra Alexandri (Access 2000).During these early stages of recording, the DMPA (as the DMNAM was named at the time) participated in a consortium in 1999-2000 entitled ‘European Network of Cultural Heritage Laboratories (AREA I: Archives of European Archaeology) under the ‘Raphael’ programme.

University students studying archaeology, history and archiving who chose to complete their practical training at the HAAR in the framework of the “Atlas” programme (Student Practical Training Hub, Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs) have contributed from time to time to enriching the digital database.
