Conservation Laboratory

The Historical Archive of Antiquities features a conservation laboratory tasked with the conservation, both preventive and remedial, of hard-copy artifacts.

The initial conservation work aims at preventing the future deterioration of the condition or even loss of hard-copy material.

At this stage, conservators remove of all aggravating factors and select appropriate storage media to prevent further damage to the material, which is then stored in the repository under constant temperature and relative humidity conditions.

Remedial conservation involves cleaning, filling and affixing work using materials that are compatible with the primary material and reversible, aiming to restore damage and prevent further losses of hard-copy material.

Conservators work together with the scientific staff of the archive to determine priority in the context of remedial conservation in accordance with the importance of artifacts and their condition.
